On Saturday Dec 6 2014, Dr. John and his two assistants, Erin and Hailey, took a very interesting course at the Bites Institute, a centre for Dental Implant Training in Burnaby.
The course was about Blood Spinning to obtain PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) and how it can be used in many types of dental surgery.
Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) is a matrix con
centrate of autologous platelets, leukocytes and fibrin. Unlike other methods of isolating autogenic biological modifiers (such as PDGF or PRP), the PRF fabrication procedure is not heavily dependent on operator technique. The PRF fabrication procedure is simple and works wonders to accelerate healing after almost any type of dental surgery.
In short, the PRF procedure involves drawing a small amount of the patient's own blood in the same way one would have a blood test. The blood is then placed into a Centrifuge machine that spins the blood at a high RPM, resulting the separation of the red blood cells from the platelet rich fibrin. This PRF can then be manipulated into various states and placed into surgical sites. Because the PRF contains all of the growth factors contained in the blood, using it in areas where bone and blood supply have been lost can result in increased healing and more predictable surgical results long term.
