In 2014 there was a spate of articles about the wonders of a new treatment to heal cavities and remove the need for drilling, injections and fillings. So what's the latest on this treatment which sounds almost too good to be true?
Electrically Accelerated and Enhanced Remineralisation (EAER)
- A bit of a mouthful and the acronym gives no clue so what the heck does it mean?
- In short this cavity treatment was designed by scientists at King's College, London, UK and is a method which supposedly stimulates teeth to fix themselves using a pen-like device.
- But how, you ask? Well a nifty electrical device using micro currents agitates the calcium and phosphate minerals already in the tooth and encourages them to re-mineralize the decayed areas of the tooth thus restoring it to its original healthy state.
- So if tooth decay is due to a loss of essential minerals in a tooth, until the tipping point of no return is reached, then this treatment is a reversal of the process.
- An additional bonus is that they claim the treatment can also strengthen and whiten and thus remove the need for bleaching.
What's the status now?
The reports claimed that the treatment could be on the market within three years but it's all been a bit quiet since then.
The company, Reminova, is actually based in Scotland and, as of July 2015, appears to have been trying to source £1M (over 2 million CAD) using crowdfunding in order to develop the technique and bring it to the commercial market.
The offer is now closed but it doesn't say if the target was reached.
